TITLE: Mourning the Loss
DESCRIPTION: The artist apologizes for the initial lewdness of this piece, but there is a story. Greg Johnson works hands on in his 25-year old body shop with his apprentices. In the last several years he has been faced with the challenge of performing insurance repairs on new and nearly new cars, which 10 years ago would have been obvious total losses. A vehicle totals out when the cost of repairs reaches 75% of the retail value. That's $7,500. On a $10,000 car. That's $30,000 on a $40,000 car. However perfectly that massive repair is performed, the car still carries that history on various internet sites, as well as leaving the owner liable to a lawsuit if the car is sold without disclosing this history. This is a really tangible diminishment of value.
Sorry, that was a lot of background. What's that have to do with this work of art?
All the pieces comprising "Mourning the Loss" were from the scrap pile of a late model BMW repair including: hood, fenders, aluminum heat shield, tail lamps, airbags, and horn. This is an attempt to communicate the loss, the blues, and the anger a vehicle owner suffers when their fine, special, cherished, and expensive vehicle looses it virginity and value.
